My nearly 4 month old baby can roll from back to tummy with relative ease but can’t roll from tummy to back. He often rolls over in his sleep. Most of the time he wakes and cries so we re-settle and put him on his back. However sometimes he self settles and stays asleep on his tummy. Should we leave him on his tummy if still asleep or roll him onto his back? Rolling him wakes him. He sleeps in a sleeping bag in a cot.
Most babies will be rolling by 5-6 months of age (some earlier, some later).
Red Nose recommends that you ensure the following:
• cease wrapping baby (I see he is in a sleep bag)
• mattress is firm and well fitting and flat
• nothing loose or soft in the cot.
Does he roll when awake and doing tummy time? Increase tummy time when awake as needed, as this will help to improve his upper body strength. When you are happy with his ability to lift his head and roll you can leave him in his position of comfort.
Still always place baby on back to sleep.
