Hi, my son is 21months, at the moment he is still in his cot but we will probably transition his bed to toddler mode in the next coming months. My question is when is it considered safe to give him sheets and a light blanket? Previously we have used the sleeping bags for safety reasons. Should we wait until he is in a big bed? P.s not planning to give him a pillow, just top sheet and blanket.. thanks in advance

Hi Kelly,

Thank you for contacting Red Nose with your question.

Red Nose recommends that you keep soft &/or loose items out of the baby’s sleep environment until they move to a bed.

It is safer to wait until the child starts to sleep in a bed before introducing a pillow or other soft bedding
See: http://www.rednose.com.au/article/at-what-age-can-i-introduce-cot-bumpers-and-pillows for more info.

You can use a top sheet & blanket when it is cool, but make sure they are tucked in. Often babies/toddlers at this age do not stay under bed covers, so if you are concerned about him being cold, we would suggest an extra layer of clothing.

Kind regards, Kasey, Red Nose.
