Hello, I have been seeing quite a few ladies on Facebook post about using a pet cooling mat for their babies to cool them down, some using it just for playtime, others have it in the cot, however there are also many people saying it's a SIDS risk. As a first time mum I'm torn on whether this is a good idea for my son. Would you be able to provide any information on whether it's safe? Thank you
Red Nose recommends that the safest place for baby to sleep is in a safe cot on a firm, flat, clean and well fitted mattress in the same room as their caregiver for the first 6-12 months.
Overheating is a risk factor for SUDI, which is why Red Nose recommends babies are slept on their back with their head and face uncovered and use breathable light weight fabrics such as muslin or cotton.
Red Nose does not recommend any one room temperature for safe sleeping but instead recommends caregivers dress children in clothing that is suitable to their environment, for example a singlet and nappy in hot weather.
